isaur

isaur was the solo project of American musician Rex McCreight, active primarily between 2021 and 2023. Starting the project at just 13 years old, McCreight quickly developed a signature sound characterized by 'atmospherically pleasing shoegaze' that leaned heavily into lo-fi and slowcore territories.

The project's peak coincided with the release of 'Aux' and '1991', albums that garnered significant attention on platforms like TikTok and SoundCloud, positioning isaur within a new wave of 'bedroom shoegaze' artists. Musically, isaur is defined by extreme vocal immersion, where lyrics are often unintelligible beneath layers of tape hiss and distorted guitar. Despite the project's success, McCreight chose to end isaur in early 2023 due to the suffocating nature of genre labels and a toxic fanbase that romanticized the music's darker themes. The project remains a cult touchstone for the 2020s DIY scene, representing a bridge between traditional 90s shoegaze influences and the hyper-isolated, digital-first production of Gen Z indie. McCreight has since transitioned to a new project, Crashdrive, seeking to distance himself from the 'lofi-slowcore' pigeonhole.
