Dense, meteorological soundscapes that feel like navigating a city lost in permanent fog. Deeply textured ambient music for moments of profound isolation.
Jeff Greinke creates music that feels less like a performance and more like a weather pattern. His sound is defined by a heavy, humid density, often sounding as if it were recorded through several layers of gauze or thick mist. It is ambient music with a weight to it, eschewing the bright 'new age' tropes for something far more mysterious, urban, and occasionally unsettling. The listening experience is one of total immersion, where the boundaries between musical instruments and environmental noise become indistinguishable.
What truly sets Greinke apart is his background in meteorology, which informs his structural approach to sound. He doesn't just write melodies; he builds atmospheric systems. Using the studio as a primary instrument, he layers field recordings, processed electronics, and acoustic fragments into 'sound sculptures' that evoke specific physical spaces. His work captures the tension of a city at night or the vast, lonely scale of a changing sky, making it a cornerstone of the dark ambient movement.
Newcomers should start with 'Cities in Fog', a landmark release that perfectly encapsulates his ability to turn the studio into a portal for imaginary, misty landscapes. For those interested in his more collaborative and rhythmic side, his work with the group LAND offers a fascinating bridge between his ambient roots and avant-garde jazz-rock.
Jeff Greinke (b. 1959) is an American ambient rock and jazz rock artist and composer currently based in Tucson, Arizona. He is known as one of the pioneers of dark ambient music, with his earlier solo albums often compared to works by Robert Rich, Brian Eno, and Vidna Obmana. Greinke's approach on his ambient works is to heavily layer, multitrack, and texture soundscapes, effectively using the studio as an instrument. In 1993 Greinke founded the group LAND, described by guitarist Dennis Rea as "an odd blend of jazz, rock, electronic, and world music." LAND released three albums between 1995 and 2001 and also played live extensively, including a 1996 tour of China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Greinke is also half of the duo Hana with Sky Cries Mary vocalist Anisa Romero. Hana has released two albums to date. Greinke spent his early life in New Jersey, later moving with his family to Chicago and Pennsylvania. He studied meteorology at Penn State University, where he began composing and performing music in 1980, then relocated to Seattle in 1982, before eventually settling in Tucson.
