Jeff Mills is a foundational architect of Detroit techno and a global icon of electronic music. Emerging in the 1980s as 'The Wizard' on Detroit radio, he bridged the gap between industrial, electro, and house before co-founding the Underground Resistance (UR) collective with 'Mad' Mike Banks.
UR established a militant, anti-corporate aesthetic that defined techno's political and cultural identity. Mills eventually moved toward a more minimalist, art-focused path, founding Axis Records in 1992. His sound identity is defined by high-tempo (often 135+ BPM), stripped-back rhythmic loops and a virtuosic use of the Roland TR-909. Beyond the club, Mills has pioneered the intersection of techno and high art, performing with philharmonic orchestras and creating new scores for silent films like Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. He is widely regarded by critics and peers as the most technically proficient DJ in the history of the genre, maintaining a career that spans from gritty warehouse origins to receiving the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
