Gravelly, soulful folk rock that balances spiritual searching with raw, earthly grit. Honest songwriting for long drives and deep self-reflection.
Jennifer Knapp’s music feels like a conversation with a friend who isn't afraid to tell you the hard truths. It is anchored by her distinctive, smoky alto - a voice that carries both the weight of experience and a restless, searching energy. The sound is fundamentally rootsy, built on a foundation of driving acoustic guitars and steady rhythms that lean into the more muscular side of folk rock. It’s music that feels lived-in, like a favorite denim jacket that has seen its share of road miles and rainstorms.
What truly sets her apart is the palpable tension between her spiritual roots and her commitment to radical honesty. While her early work emerged from the contemporary Christian scene, it always possessed a grit and lyrical complexity that transcended the genre's typical boundaries. She writes about faith, doubt, and identity not as abstract concepts, but as visceral, daily struggles. This authenticity creates a deep sense of intimacy, making the listener feel like they are witnessing a private moment of reckoning.
For those new to her catalog, the debut album 'Kansas' remains the essential entry point, capturing the raw power of her early songwriting. From there, 'Lay It Down' offers a more polished but equally intense exploration of her sound. Her later work, like 'Letting Go,' provides a fascinating look at her evolution as an artist and advocate, stripping away the religious expectations to reveal the resilient human heart underneath.
Jennifer Lynn Knapp (born April 12, 1974) is an American-Australian folk rock and contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter, author, and LGBTQ advocate. She is best known for her first single "Undo Me" from her Gold-certified debut studio album, Kansas (1998), and the song "A Little More" from her Grammy Award-nominated album, Lay It Down (2000). The Way I Am (2001) was also nominated for a Grammy. In total, the three albums have sold approximately 1 million copies. After a seven-year hiatus, Knapp returned to music and announced that she was in a relationship with a woman, sparking controversy among her Christian fans and becoming one of the first and most well-known Christian music artists to come out as gay. On May 11, 2010, she released Letting Go which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard 200 chart. Knapp's memoir, Facing the Music, was published in 2014. Since then, she has become an advocate for LGBTQ Christians and continued to perform and create music. Her most recent album is Kansas 25 (2024), a re-recording of her debut album.
