Stunning operatic vocals duetting with century-old archival recordings. A lush, cinematic bridge between ancestral Maliseet songs and modern neoclassical piano.

Intro

Jeremy Dutcher creates music that feels like a conversation across time. His sound is anchored by his incredible operatic tenor, which possesses a rare clarity and power, but it is the way he interacts with the past that makes it truly singular. He often incorporates crackling field recordings of his ancestors from wax cylinders, weaving his contemporary piano and orchestral arrangements around their voices until the two eras become one seamless, breathing entity.

What makes him distinctive is the tension between Western classical training and Indigenous oral tradition. This isn't just 'folk' music; it is a grand, theatrical reclamation. The production is often lush and expansive, using strings and choral layers to create a sense of immense scale, yet it remains deeply intimate, as if you are eavesdropping on a private ritual of remembrance and survival.

Start with the album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. It is a masterpiece of modern composition that serves as both a political act and a deeply moving musical experience. Listen for the track 'Mehcinut' to hear how he transforms a funeral song into a soaring, defiant celebration of life and language.

Jeremy Dutcher is a classically trained Indigenous Canadian tenor, composer, musicologist, performer and activist, who previously lived in Toronto, Ontario and currently lives in Montréal, Québec. He became widely known for his first album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, which won the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards.
