Jesu

Jesu is the primary creative vehicle for Justin Broadrick, established in 2003 following the dissolution of his pioneering industrial metal band Godflesh. While Godflesh was defined by urban decay and misanthropy, Jesu represents a shift toward emotional vulnerability and melodic exploration.

The project is a cornerstone of the post-metal genre, specifically credited with bridging the gap between the crushing weight of drone metal and the ethereal textures of shoegaze. Broadrick's use of programmed percussion and layered, down-tuned guitars creates a 'wall of sound' that is both physically imposing and emotionally resonant. Throughout its evolution, Jesu has moved from the stark, long-form compositions of the Heart Ache EP to the more structured, almost 'pop' sensibilities of the Silver EP and Conqueror. The project has maintained a high level of critical respect for its ability to maintain a signature sonic identity while collaborating across genres, including splits with Eluvium and Battle of Mice. Jesu remains a vital influence on the 'metalgaze' movement, influencing acts like The Angelic Process and Planning for Burial.
