Intro

Imagine a sound that bridges the gap between the industrial grit of England's Black Country and the humid heat of a Memphis recording studio. Joanne Shaw Taylor delivers a masterclass in modern blues rock, defined by a guitar tone that is simultaneously biting and buttery. Her playing is technically formidable but never flashy for the sake of it, favoring melodic phrasing and deep, sustain-heavy bends that feel like they are pulling secrets out of the wood of her Stratocaster.

What truly sets Taylor apart is the contrast between her fiery instrumental work and her vocal delivery. She possesses a distinctive, smoky contralto that sounds decades older than her years, often compared to the soulful rasp of Dusty Springfield or Bonnie Raitt. This vocal texture adds a layer of vulnerability and sophistication to her music, transforming standard blues progressions into something more intimate and emotionally resonant.

For those looking to dive in, 'The Blues Album' or 'Diamonds in the Dirt' are the perfect entry points. They showcase her ability to balance high-octane rock energy with the slow-burning, soulful balladry that has made her a favorite of legends like Dave Stewart and Joe Bonamassa. It is music for people who want the raw emotion of the blues without sacrificing modern production values.

Joanne Shaw Taylor (born 1985, England) is an English singer and guitarist. She was discovered by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics at the age of 16. Taylor's albums via Ruf Records, White Sugar (2009) and Diamonds in the Dirt (2010), peaked at No. 8 in the US on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. Her No. 1 album, The Blues Album (2021), was released via Joe Bonamassa's Keeping the Blues Alive Records. In 2010, Taylor won Best Female Vocalist at the British Blues Awards. She won the same award at the 2011 British Blues Awards, and the Songwriter of the Year award for "Same as It Never Was", from Diamonds in the Dirt.
