Kinetic, theatrical modern classical that moves between whimsical film scores and profound choral works. Sophisticated music for deep focus or dramatic storytelling.
Joby Talbot creates music that feels like a clockwork mechanism made of glass and velvet. It is highly rhythmic and precise, yet it possesses a deep, breathing humanity that prevents it from ever feeling cold. Whether he is writing for a massive choir or a small chamber ensemble, there is a sense of forward motion and narrative curiosity that keeps the listener engaged. It is the sound of a brilliant mind organizing chaos into something beautiful and slightly strange.
What truly sets Talbot apart is his background in pop arrangement and comedy scoring, which lends his classical work a unique sense of timing and wit. He avoids the dry academicism of some contemporary peers, opting instead for vivid textures and melodic hooks that feel cinematic even when they aren't written for the screen. His choral writing, in particular, uses polyphony not just as a technique, but as a way to create a shimmering, immersive environment.
For those new to his work, Path of Miracles is an essential starting point for its spiritual depth and vocal mastery. If you prefer something more playful and visual, his score for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland captures his ability to blend traditional orchestral grandeur with modern, quirky sensibilities. It is perfect music for when you want to feel intellectually stimulated but emotionally grounded.
