Intro

Jon Cutler embodies the quintessential sound of New York City deep house. His music is a masterclass in balance, pairing the mechanical precision of a drum machine with the organic, breathing soul of jazz-inflected keys and gospel-tinged vocals. It is music that feels lived-in, carrying the weight and history of the city's dance floors into every polished production.

What sets Cutler apart is his restraint and his ear for texture. While many house producers lean into aggression or minimalism, Cutler embraces a lush, multi-layered approach. You'll hear the warmth of a Fender Rhodes, the subtle snap of live-sounding percussion, and basslines that don't just thump, but actually groove. It's sophisticated without being cold, and underground without being unapproachable.

For the uninitiated, his classic 'It's Yours' is the essential starting point. It captures the spiritual, spoken-word energy that defined an era of clubbing. From there, dive into his EPs on Distant Music to hear how he translates that same soulful DNA into deeper, more instrumental territory that works just as well in a lounge as it does at 4am on a packed floor.

Jon Cutler (born 1969) is an American house musician from Brooklyn, New York. Cutler has lived in New York City all his life. He began DJing at the age of 15, and studied photography at the School of Visual Arts before returning to house music full-time. Cutler began releasing 12-inch remixes on his own Distant Music record label in 1997. In 2001, Cutler produced the track "It's Yours" (featuring E-Man) for Chez Music, which hit No. 38 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2004, he was featured on the compilation album Afterdark: New York City, which peaked at No. 23 on the U.S. Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart. In 2012, Mat Zo sampled this song for his song "It's Yours" on his Bipolar LP.
