Ethereal vocals drifting through a landscape of crystalline synths and intricate glitch beats. A cinematic blend of dream pop and IDM for late-night introspection.
Julian Fane creates a sound that feels like a high-definition dream. It is music that occupies the thin space between the organic and the digital, where breathy, Sigur Ros-adjacent vocals are cradled by the precise, clicking rhythms of IDM. The atmosphere is consistently cool and spacious, evoking images of vast northern landscapes or the quiet hum of a server room at night. It is deeply melodic but never simple, maintaining a sense of mystery through its complex layering.
What truly distinguishes Fane is his ability to make electronic music feel vulnerable. While his peers on labels like Planet Mu often leaned into the aggressive or the purely mathematical, Fane used those same tools to craft something heart-on-sleeve. His production is characterized by a 'liquid' quality, where synths wash over the listener in waves, punctuated by tiny, sharp digital artifacts that keep the ear engaged without breaking the spell.
Start with the album Special Forces. It is the definitive statement of his sound, balancing pop-sensible melodies with the experimental textures of the mid-2000s electronic scene. It is the perfect companion for moments of quiet solitude or creative focus where you want to feel transported to a more beautiful, slightly pixelated version of reality.
Julian Fane is an electronic producer, vocalist and DJ based in New York. He is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia where he came to the attention of the Planet Mu imprint. Two albums Special Forces (2004) and Our New Quarters (2007) followed but for the past few years he's recorded primarily for film and TV. His ethereal perspective evokes the sounds of Sigur Rós and The Flaming Lips whilst his musical range compares to that of Boards Of Canada and Mercury Rev, a true reflection of his skills behind the big screen. In 2013 Julian signed with Lewis Recordings. His release Racer is a nine-track album with hints of the aforementioned Sigur Rós and Boards Of Canada, Kraftwerk and Jai Paul. Julian provided the keyboards on the "Daylight For Delay" EP by Astoria.
