Julien-K was founded in 2003 by Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh, core members of the multi-platinum industrial rock band Orgy. Based in Long Beach, California, the project represents a shift away from the nu-metal associations of their previous work toward a more refined electronic rock and 'California Noir' sound.
Their debut, 'Death to Analog' (2009), established their identity: a fusion of darkwave, synth-pop, and industrial rock characterized by high-fidelity production and a nocturnal urban atmosphere. The band has maintained a fiercely independent streak, often utilizing crowdfunding to maintain creative control. Their evolution has seen them oscillate between the synth-heavy melodicism of the 'California Noir' chapters and the abrasive, old-school industrial aggression of 'Harmonic Disruptor'.
