Gritty, sociopolitical Finnish rap delivered from behind a mask. Dark, industrial-tinged beats meet uncompromising lyrics about mental health and class struggle.
This is the sound of the Finnish underground at its most visceral and unvarnished. Julma-Henri's music feels like a transmission from a basement where the ventilation has failed; it is heavy, humid, and thick with the scent of wet concrete and stale smoke. The production often leans into murky, lo-fi textures and industrial-influenced rhythms that provide a claustrophobic backdrop for his gravelly, intense delivery. It is hip-hop stripped of all its celebratory sheen, replaced by a raw, rhythmic pulse that mirrors the anxiety of modern life.
What truly sets this artist apart is the unflinching commitment to anonymity and the gravity of the subject matter. By performing in a balaclava, Henri shifts the focus entirely to the message, which navigates the darkest corners of the human psyche and the failures of the state. Unlike the punchline-heavy style of his contemporaries, his writing is dense, poetic, and deeply uncomfortable, treating topics like drug addiction and clinical depression with a documentary-like realism that feels both personal and universal.
Start with the landmark album Al-Qaida Finland. It is a foundational text of Finnish dark rap that captures a specific moment of social unrest and personal turmoil. From there, move to Psykoterapia to hear a more conceptual, inward-looking exploration of the mind. It is essential listening for anyone who prefers their hip-hop with a sharp political edge and a heavy dose of existential weight.
Julma-Henri (in English Grim Henry) is a Finnish rapper based in Helsinki. In addition to his solo act, he was part of rap band Forever from 1998 to 2001 under the name Money. He appeared in collective Julma-Henri & Syrjäytyneet (2007–2010) and from 2010 strongly collaborated as duo Julma-Henri & RPK. With RPK, he launched an official duo rap act known as Eurocrack (stylized as E U R O C R A C K) in 2012. He always appears disguised without revealing much of his face. Julma-Henri is known for his lurid and gritty sociopolitical lyrics. With names such as Steen1 and Panama Rayo, he became famous for having a remarkably darker, harder and more serious punk influenced lyrical tone compared to other Finnish rappers, who were famous for their relatively light-minded, punchline-centric lyrics. In the early 2000s, his music and public image were widely associated with anarchism and proletarian activism and he made a name for himself by performing in illegal parties, political protests and even riots.
