Sun-drenched jazz samples meet early house rhythms. Afrocentric, positive, and rhythmically adventurous hip-hop for city walks and summer nights.
The Jungle Brothers sound like the exact moment hip-hop realized it could be more than just a street report. Their music is a warm, dusty collage of jazz horns, funk breaks, and unexpected house music pulses. It carries a specific New York energy that is both intellectual and deeply physical, moving seamlessly from Afrocentric philosophy to dancefloor-ready grooves without ever losing its cool.
What truly distinguishes them is their fearless experimentation. While their peers were perfecting the boom-bap formula, the Jungle Brothers were the first to invite house producers into the booth, creating a hybrid sound that felt like a bridge between the block party and the warehouse rave. Their vocal interplay is relaxed and conversational, lacking the aggressive posturing of the era in favor of a collective, communal spirit.
Start with 'Done by the Forces of Nature' to hear the Native Tongues aesthetic in its most refined form. It is a masterpiece of sampling and consciousness that remains one of the most essential documents of the late 80s alternative rap movement.
Jungle Brothers are an American hip hop trio composed of Michael Small (Mike Gee), and Nathaniel Hall (Afrika Baby Bam). Hailed as pioneers of the fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and house music, they were the first hip-hop group to collaborate with a house-music producer. The trio released their debut album, Straight out the Jungle, in July 1988. Their hip-house club hit single, "I'll House You" was added to the album in late-1988 reissues. Fostered by Kool DJ Red Alert, the Jungle Brothers' success influenced De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and eventually the Native Tongues collective that they founded.
