Kælan Mikla

Icy Icelandic darkwave that pairs haunting synth melodies with driving bass and visceral shrieks. Like a midnight walk through a frozen forest.

Intro

Kælan Mikla sounds like the physical embodiment of an Icelandic winter. Their music is built on a foundation of heavy, driving basslines that feel like footsteps in deep snow, topped with crystalline synthesizers that shimmer like frost. The vocals are the most striking element, shifting effortlessly between breathy, ethereal whispers and sudden, blood-curdling shrieks that pierce through the atmospheric fog.

What sets them apart is their origin as a poetry slam trio. This literary foundation gives their songs a rhythmic, incantatory quality that feels more like a ritual than a standard pop song. They lean heavily into themes of witchcraft, folklore, and the unforgiving nature of their homeland, creating a sound that is both deeply rooted in the coldwave tradition and entirely unique to their specific geographic and cultural context.

Start with the album 'Nótt eftir nótt' to hear them at their most polished and evocative. It captures the perfect balance between their early punk aggression and the lush, cinematic synth-pop textures they have refined over the years. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who finds beauty in the dark, the cold, and the mysterious.

Kælan Mikla (lit. 'Lady of the Cold', Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈcʰaiːlan ˈmɪhkla]) is an Icelandic post-punk band, formed in 2013 in Reykjavík. The trio consists of lead vocalist Laufey Soffía, bassist Margrét Rósa Dóru-Harrýsdóttir and keyboardist Sólveig Matthildur Kristjánsdóttir. Their music has been described as post-punk, dark wave, cold wave and gothic. The band's debut album Mánadans was recorded in 2014 and featured Matthildur on drums instead of synthesizer. They released a self-titled follow-up in 2016 by Fabrika Records, Nótt eftir nótt in 2018 and Undir köldum norðurljósum in 2021. They are currently signed to Artoffact Records. The band has played the famous Dutch music festival Roadburn, been championed by Robert Smith of the Cure and opened for Placebo, Alcest, and Ville Valo of HIM.
