Theatrical industrial rock that feels like a haunted carnival. Dark, playful, and deeply atmospheric music for those who prefer the shadows.
Közi's music is a vivid descent into a world of gothic whimsy and industrial grit. It sounds like a haunted toy box being opened in a dark, neon-lit basement. You'll hear the clatter of mechanical percussion alongside sweeping, romantic guitar lines that recall his legendary tenure in Malice Mizer, but with a sharper, more experimental edge. The atmosphere is thick with mystery, often leaning into a 'dark carnival' aesthetic that feels both playful and deeply unsettling.
What truly sets Közi apart is his ability to blend the organic with the synthetic. His baritone vocals are often treated with effects that make him sound like a ghost in the machine, while his guitar work utilizes unusual scales and staccato rhythms that mimic the jerky movements of a marionette. There is a tactile, dusty quality to his production, as if the music itself was recovered from a long-lost film reel.
For those new to his solo work, 'Catharsis' is the essential starting point. It perfectly captures his transition from the symphonic grandeur of his past into the more jagged, electronic-influenced rock that defines his solo identity. It is music for the outsiders, the dreamers, and anyone who finds beauty in the strange and the macabre.
Közi (born May 29, 1972) is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter and DJ. He is best known as one of the guitarists for the 1990s visual kei rock band Malice Mizer. After they went on indefinite hiatus in 2001, he formed the industrial rock duo Eve of Destiny and also started a solo career. Közi is currently in the bands XA-VAT, ZIZ, Vamquet, and Mayohk, while occasionally performing solo shows. During his time in Malice Mizer, Közi often assumed the role of a pierrot doll, dressing in clown-like costumes with large ruffs, always in shades of red, his favorite color. In music videos and on-stage he would often make movements reminiscent of a marionette. Közi has continued this visual style to some extent, but his contemporary stage costumes are more gothic. His work on the Izayoi no Tsuki project was reminiscent of carnival music, and artwork for his projects usually follow a dramatic, theatrical theme.
