Intimate, tape-hissed sketches that feel like reading a private diary. Lo-fi bedroom pop with a surreal, stream-of-consciousness edge for quiet contemplation.
Keel Her sounds like the secret recordings you'd find on an unmarked cassette in a thrift store shoebox. It is music defined by its proximity; the vocals are often whispered or softly layered, sitting right against the microphone, while the instrumentation consists of jangly, slightly out-of-tune guitars and skeletal drum machine patterns. There is a persistent warmth from tape saturation that makes even the more melancholic tracks feel like a worn-in sweater.
What truly distinguishes Rose Keeler-Schaffeler's work is the raw, unedited feel of her songwriting. She treats recording as a therapeutic, stream-of-consciousness process, resulting in songs that often feel like fleeting thoughts or half-remembered dreams rather than polished pop structures. This 'sketchbook' aesthetic creates a profound sense of intimacy, as if the listener is sitting on the floor of her bedroom while she works through an idea in real-time.
Start with the 'Family Portrait' collection to hear her at her most cohesive, or dive into the various 'Demos' years to experience the pure, unfiltered evolution of her lo-fi craft. It is perfect for those who find beauty in the imperfections of home recording and the quiet power of a simple, honest melody.
Keel Her is the musical recording project of English musician Rose Keeler-Schaffeler. She is originally from Winchester and currently resides in London. Keeler-Schaffeler began writing and recording "bedroom music" in 2007 for therapeutic reasons. As a child she learnt the violin but also plays guitar, bass and keyboards. She has described her writing process as being like a "stream of consciousness". She has collaborated with musicians including lo-fi musician R. Stevie Moore and Daniel O'Sullivan, and has worked with artists such as Hot Sugar, Linda Smith and Clairo (Claire Cottrill).
