Kimyan Law, the moniker of Nico Mpunga, represents a pivotal shift in the drum and bass landscape toward 'organic' or 'naturalistic' IDM. Born to a Congolese father and Austrian mother, Mpunga’s work is deeply informed by his displaced heritage and his childhood experiences with racism and isolation in Vienna.

His sound identity is defined by the use of non-traditional sound sources, often recording foley from trash, wood, and glass to create a percussion-heavy, highly textured aesthetic. Unlike the synthetic focus of many peers, Law emphasizes 'fragrances' and 'portraits' in his music, treating tracks as sensory experiences rather than mere engineering feats. His debut 'Coeur Calme' (2014) on Blu Mar Ten Music established him as a critical darling, bridging the gap between the technicality of drum and bass and the emotional resonance of contemporary classical and world music. His evolution through 'Zawadi' and 'Yonda' shows an increasing complexity in rhythmic layering, often utilizing 170 BPM tempos but applying them to delicate, brittle textures that defy the typical 'dancefloor' mandate of the genre.
