Kittie

Kittie emerged from London, Ontario, in 1996, initially as a grunge-influenced outfit before evolving into one of the most significant acts of the nu metal explosion. Their 1999 debut, Spit, achieved RIAA Gold status, propelled by the hit Brackish and a sound that blended rap-influenced cadences with aggressive metal.

However, the band quickly pivoted away from the nu metal label. By their second album, Oracle, they embraced elements of death metal, thrash, and groove metal, showcasing a technical proficiency and a darker sonic palette that alienated casual pop-metal fans but solidified their standing in the extreme metal community. Led by sisters Morgan and Mercedes Lander, the band has navigated numerous lineup changes while maintaining a consistent identity centered on themes of betrayal, resilience, and self-empowerment. Their influence is significant, serving as a bridge for women in the male-dominated metal scene and influencing artists ranging from Poppy to Lzzy Hale. Critically, they are recognized for their longevity and their refusal to remain stagnant, culminating in a successful 2024 comeback that reaffirmed their place in the modern metal landscape.
