KNEECAP

Bilingual Irish rap that hits with the force of a petrol bomb. High-octane political satire, rave-ready beats, and unapologetic Belfast grit for the restless.

Intro

Kneecap sounds like a riot that somehow turned into a massive warehouse rave. Their music is a high-velocity collision of traditional Irish identity and modern urban decay, delivered through rapid-fire bilingual flows that switch between Irish and English without breaking a sweat. The production leans heavily into the aggressive side of boom-bap and UK bass music, featuring distorted low-ends and sharp, percussive samples that demand physical movement.

What truly sets them apart is their fearless use of satire and political provocation. They manage to be deeply serious about Irish republicanism and language rights while simultaneously rapping about drug culture and hedonism with a wink and a grin. It is music that feels dangerous to the status quo, yet it is shot through with a communal, celebratory energy that makes it impossible to ignore.

Start with the album Fine Art to hear their most realized sonic vision. It captures the chaotic spirit of a night out in West Belfast while showcasing their technical evolution as rappers and producers. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their hip-hop with a side of genuine rebellion.

Kneecap are an Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast, Northern Ireland. It comprises Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, the stage names of Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and J. J. Ó Dochartaigh, respectively. They rap in a mixture of English and Irish. Their first single "C.E.A.R.T.A." (cearta is Irish for 'rights') was released in 2017, followed by their debut studio album, 3CAG, in 2018. Their second studio album, Fine Art, was released in 2024 and a biographical film was released later the same year. In January 2026, they announced their third studio album, Fenian, would be released the following April. The group has been at the centre of public debates about free speech and the expression of political opinions within Ireland and the UK. Their themes focus on working class Belfast youth culture, Irish republicanism and Irish language rights. In concert, they have made statements supporting Palestinian nationalism and condemning the Gaza genocide. Their name is derived from the extralegal punishment attacks meted out by Northern Irish paramilitary groups.
