La Trampa

La Trampa is a cornerstone of the 'Rock Uruguayo' explosion that occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Formed in 1990 by architect students Garo Arakelián and Sergio Schellemberg, the band's identity was forged through a unique blend of hard rock, post-punk, and traditional Rio de la Plata influences like tango and milonga.

This 'tango-rock' fusion provided a sophisticated, melancholic alternative to the more straightforward punk-pop of peers like Trotsky Vengarán or the ska-inflections of Once Tiros. Throughout their career, particularly during the Alejandro Spuntone era, the band achieved massive commercial success in Uruguay, culminating in sold-out stadium shows and multi-platinum albums like 'Caída libre'. Critically, they are respected for their lyrical depth, often exploring existentialist themes and social decay with a poetic rigor. Despite several hiatuses, their influence remains pervasive in the Southern Cone, serving as a bridge between traditional folk-roots and modern alternative rock. Their sound is defined by Arakelián’s distinctive guitar work, which often utilizes minor-key arpeggios and rhythmic patterns derived from local folklore, and Spuntone’s powerful, emotive vocal presence.
