Larvae is the primary musical alias of Atlanta-based artist Matthew Jeanes, emerging in the late 1990s as a departure from traditional band structures. The project is deeply rooted in the 'Ad Noiseam' label aesthetic, which bridged the gap between rhythmic noise, breakcore, and IDM.

Larvae's work is characterized by a heavy reliance on Super 8 film aesthetics and a 'culture jamming' philosophy, most notably seen in early EPs like 'Monster Music' and 'Empire' which deconstructed kaiju and sci-fi tropes. Over time, the sound evolved from aggressive, dance-oriented breakbeats into the more introspective and melancholic territory found on 'Dead Weight' and 'Exit Strategy'. Critically, Larvae is respected for maintaining a cinematic narrative arc within instrumental electronic music, often incorporating sound design elements that suggest a visual component even in audio-only formats. The project occupies a specific niche alongside artists like Mothboy and Detritus, favoring emotional resonance and atmospheric density over the pure technical showmanship often found in the breakcore scene.
