Combative Argentine rock fusion that weaponizes cumbia, punk, and ska against the machine. Sharp irony, militant energy, and songs built for the barricades.
This is the sound of a street protest that accidentally became a dance party. Las Manos de Filippi specialize in a high-velocity collision of styles, where the jagged edges of punk rock meet the infectious, rhythmic swing of cumbia and ska. It is music that refuses to be polite, characterized by a raw, unpolished energy that feels like it was captured in a single take in a crowded room. The instrumentation is driving and brass-forward, providing a festive backdrop to some of the most biting political commentary in Latin American rock.
What truly sets them apart is their masterful use of irony and satire. While their message is deeply serious, their delivery often leans into the absurd, using humor as a Trojan horse for radical critiques of capitalism and state power. The vocals are distinctive and often nasal, shifting between rhythmic rapping and melodic shouting, always maintaining a sense of urgent, confrontational intimacy. It is the musical equivalent of a political cartoon: sharp, exaggerated, and impossible to ignore.
Start with 'Arriba las manos, esto es el Estado' to hear them at their most foundational. It captures the 90s Argentine zeitgeist perfectly, blending social outrage with the kind of hooks that stay in your head long after the demonstration is over. If you want to hear the song that defined a generation of dissent, look for their original version of 'Sr. Cobranza'.
Las Manos de Filippi (in English: The Hands of Filippi) and also LMF, is a group of Argentine rock fusion and alternative style, which blends Caribbean rhythms like cumbia, ska, hip hop, reggae and punk rock. His songs contain messages against capitalism, the International Monetary Fund and the political power shift, as well as a critical look at society, using as a basis the complaint, irony and humor. Its name comes sarcastically, by stealing the hands of Juan Domingo Perón and his fanaticism for the French band Mano Negra. They are also known his membership with the Workers' Party and the defense to the working class. Some of their songs are most widespread: «Sr. Cobranza» (popularized by Bersuit Vergarabat), «Los métodos piqueteros», «El himno del Cucumelo», «La canaleta», «Organización» and «Mountain bike».
