Intro

León Gieco is a foundational figure in Argentine music, often described as the 'Argentine Bob Dylan' for his fusion of folk-rock and piercing social commentary. Emerging in the early 1970s under the mentorship of Gustavo Santaolalla, Gieco became a central pillar of the 'Rock Nacional' movement while simultaneously embracing traditional Argentine folk genres like Chacarera and Chamamé.

His career is marked by a fierce commitment to human rights, particularly during the years of military dictatorship in Argentina, during which his song 'Solo le pido a Dios' became an international anthem for peace. His magnum opus, the multi-volume 'De Ushuaia a La Quiaca', remains one of the most significant ethnomusicological projects in popular music, as he traveled the length of Argentina to record with indigenous and rural musicians in their own environments. Gieco's influence spans generations, bridging the gap between the 1970s rock pioneers like Charly García and modern alternative movements. He is a recipient of the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and remains a revered cultural icon whose work is inseparable from the political and social history of the Southern Cone.
