Intro

Lightning Bolt is a seminal noise rock duo from Providence, Rhode Island, consisting of Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson. Formed at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994, they became the central figures of the Fort Thunder scene, an influential warehouse space for underground art and music.

Their sound identity is built on a unique technical setup: Chippendale uses a telephone receiver as a microphone and plays drums with superhuman speed, while Gibson plays a bass guitar tuned like a cello with banjo strings for the high end, processed through a massive array of pedals. This allows them to create a wall of sound that rivals a five-piece band. Historically, they are credited with popularizing 'guerrilla' floor shows, bypassing the stage to play in the middle of the crowd. Their music bridges the gap between the avant-garde minimalism of Philip Glass and the aggressive noise of Japanese bands like Boredoms and Ruins. Critical consensus identifies them as one of the most important underground acts of the 2000s, praised for their ability to make extreme noise feel inclusive and ecstatic rather than merely abrasive.
