Intro

LiL Lotus sounds like the intersection of a Warped Tour main stage and a late-night SoundCloud rabbit hole. His music is characterized by a sharp, nasal vocal delivery that carries the melodic DNA of mid-2000s emo, but it is propelled by the heavy 808s and skittering hi-hats of modern trap. There is a constant tension between the organic grit of distorted guitars and the digital precision of hip-hop production, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and aggressively current.

What makes him distinctive is his background in metalcore and post-hardcore, which informs his sense of melody and vocal dynamics. Unlike many of his peers who lean into a mumble or a drone, Lotus often belts his choruses with a desperate, straining energy that recalls the frontmen of Saosin or The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. This 'screamo-adjacent' intensity provides a visceral emotional weight that sets him apart from the more laid-back cloud rap scene.

For those looking to dive in, 'ERRØR BØY' is the definitive starting point, showcasing his full transition into a polished pop-punk and emo-rap hybrid. If you prefer his raw, DIY roots, the 'Bodybag' EP offers a more lo-fi, atmospheric glimpse into the SoundCloud era that first defined his career.

John Elias Villagran III (born March 1, 1994), known professionally as Lil Lotus (stylized as LiL Lotus) is an American rapper and record producer from Dallas, Texas. He has released two solo studio albums, four solo EPs, three collaborative EPs and an additional two EPs as a part of the alternative hip hop group Boyfriendz and three EPs as a member of the post-hardcore band If I Die First. Beginning his career playing in multiple local Texas metalcore bands, he began an acoustic solo career in 2016 under the name Tremor. After posting a number of songs on SoundCloud he became increasingly influenced by the emerging emo rap scene on the platform, which led to him taking on the Lil Lotus moniker and associating with members and affiliates of GothBoiClique.
