Lipphead

Lipphead is a collaborative powerhouse consisting of veteran producers Blockhead (Tony Simon) and Eliot Lipp. The project represents a sophisticated merger of two distinct lineages in American independent music: the gritty, sample-heavy underground hip-hop scene of New York and the melodic, synth-driven electronic funk of the Pacific Northwest and Brooklyn.

Blockhead, a cornerstone of the Definitive Jux era and a long-time collaborator of Aesop Rock, brings a deep knowledge of rhythmic structure and obscure sampling. Eliot Lipp, known for his work on Pretty Lights Music and his own Old Tacoma label, contributes a signature analog synth palette and a more upbeat, dance-leaning sensibility. Their sound identity is characterized by mid-tempo grooves, heavy bass saturation, and a dense layering of textures that bridge the gap between boom-bap and IDM. Critically, the duo is praised for maintaining a 'human' feel in electronic production, often utilizing YHS Records as a creative hub. Their evolution from a 2019 debut EP to full-length explorations like 'In the Nude' shows a move toward more integrated, seamless compositions where the line between sample and synth is intentionally blurred.
