Lonesome River Band

High-velocity banjo picking meets soulful, three-part harmonies. This is contemporary bluegrass with a deep respect for the lonesome traditions of the Appalachian hills.

Intro

Lonesome River Band delivers a masterclass in the 'driving' style of bluegrass. It is music that feels constantly in motion, propelled by Sammy Shelor's legendary banjo work and a rhythm section that hits with the precision of a clockwork engine. The sound is crisp and bright, capturing the resonance of wood and wire without the polished artifice of modern pop-country.

What sets them apart is the 'lonesome' quality of their vocals. Even at high speeds, there is a palpable sense of yearning and heritage in the harmonies. They manage to bridge the gap between the raw, porch-side pickin' of the mid-century and the sophisticated, clean arrangements required for modern festival stages, maintaining a grit that many of their contemporaries smooth over.

Start with 'Carrying the Tradition' to hear the blueprint of modern bluegrass. It captures a band at the height of their powers, defining a sound that would influence a generation of pickers with its balance of technical wizardry and genuine emotional weight.

The Lonesome River Band is an American contemporary bluegrass band. The band has released 15 recording projects since its formation in 1982. Lonesome River Band is led by Sammy Shelor who is a member of the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame and a 5-Time International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year Award recipient. The band has experienced numerous personnel changes over the years, and has not included an original member since Tim Austin left the band in 1995 to focus on Doobie Shea Records. On November 11, 2011, band member Sammy Shelor was awarded the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Bluegrass and Banjo. Shelor was presented with the award on the Late Show with David Letterman. Following the presentation of the award, Steve Martin performed with the Lonesome River Band.
