Loop

Dense, repetitive guitar squalls and motorik rhythms that create a dark, trance-like state. Heavy space rock for losing yourself in the noise.

Intro

Formed in London in 1986 by Robert Hampson, Loop became a pivotal force in the late 1980s UK underground, effectively bridging the gap between 60s psychedelia, 70s Krautrock, and the emerging shoegaze scene. Their sound identity is defined by a 'less is more' philosophy regarding harmony, often revolving around a single chord or a repetitive two-note motif, while maximizing sonic density through extreme distortion and layering.

This approach placed them alongside Spacemen 3 as leaders of a new 'space rock' movement that rejected the polished production of the era. After a trilogy of influential albums - Heaven's End, Fade Out, and A Gilded Eternity - the band dissolved in 1991, with Hampson moving into more experimental territory with Main. Their 2013 reunion and subsequent 2022 album, Sonancy, proved their enduring relevance, showing a shift toward a leaner, more mechanical sound that still retains their signature hypnotic intensity. Critical consensus views Loop as architects of the 'drone rock' aesthetic, influencing generations of noise and psych-rock bands.
