Los Coronas

Los Coronas are the preeminent architects of the Spanish instrumental surf scene, formed in Madrid in 1991. Led by guitarist Fernando Pardo (also of Sex Museum), the band successfully localized a quintessentially American genre by blending it with garage rock, spaghetti western aesthetics, and traditional Spanish musical motifs.

Their sound identity is built on the 'Fender sound' - heavy use of Stratocasters and Showman amplifiers to achieve a wet, percussive 'thwack' that defines surf music. Over a career spanning three decades, they have evolved from purists to innovators, notably through their 'Dos bandas y un destino' project which merged their sound with the indie-folk of Arizona Baby. Critically, they are lauded for maintaining the technical rigor of 1960s pioneers like Dick Dale while injecting a modern, almost punk-rock urgency. They occupy a unique cultural position as a bridge between the global surf community and the Spanish rock mainstream, influencing a wave of 'surf-mediterráneo' acts across Europe and Latin America.
