Intro

Los del Mar is the sound of a 1990s summer vacation that never ends. Their music is built on a foundation of bright, high-tempo Eurodance beats infused with the rhythmic DNA of Andalusian folk. It is unashamedly populist, prioritizing infectious energy and simple, repetitive hooks over complexity. The production is crisp and digital, typical of the mid-90s pop charts, featuring punchy drum machines and shimmering synthesizer layers.

What distinguishes them is the specific way they translated traditional Spanish 'sevillanas' into a global club format. While their peers in the Eurodance scene often leaned into darker or more industrial sounds, Los del Mar maintained a light, breezy, and tropical aesthetic. Their vocal delivery often balances traditional Spanish crooning with the rhythmic chanting required for massive dance-floor hits, creating a bridge between regional folk and international pop.

Start with their 1995 version of 'Macarena' to understand their peak cultural impact. It is a fascinating alternative to the Los del Rio original, offering a slightly more polished, club-ready production that became a staple of 90s compilations. From there, explore 'Viva Evita' for a deeper look at their ability to blend theatrical themes with high-energy Latin dance rhythms.

Los del Mar (Spanish for those from the sea, referring to Marbella) was a short-lived Canadian music duo, best known for their 1995 cover version of the Los del Río 1993 song "Macarena", which was included on their album Macarena: The Hit Album. Their version peaked at No. 2 in Australia and No. 4 in France, and just missed the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 43 while the Los Del Río version reached number 2. Member Pedro Castaño is still touring with this song. They are specialized in Andalusian folk music, especially sevillanas, the most typical light music of Andalusia.
