Swirling Mexican psychedelia that pairs heavy fuzz-guitar riffs with unexpected flute melodies. A sun-drenched, acid-rock trip through the 1970s underground.
Los Dug Dug's are a seminal Mexican rock band formed in Durango in 1964, originally as Xippos Rock. Led by multi-instrumentalist Armando Nava, they are historically significant for being the first Mexican group to openly embrace The Beatles' influence and for breaking the cultural taboo of singing original rock compositions in English.
Their sound evolved from early garage-rock covers to a sophisticated brand of psychedelic and acid rock that defined the 'La Onda' movement in Mexico. Their 1971 self-titled album and the 1973 follow-up 'Smog' are considered masterpieces of the era, characterized by Nava's 'psychedelic guru' status, heavy use of flute, and distorted guitar work. Despite facing government repression of rock music in Mexico during the 1970s, the band maintained a cult following. Critical consensus views them as one of the most important Latin American psych bands, often compared to international contemporaries like Jethro Tull or The Shocking Blue, but with a distinct regional identity that influenced generations of Spanish-language rock artists.
