Bittersweet Spanish pop rock that pairs jangly guitars with a deep, urban melancholy. Perfect for late-night drives and reflecting on what was left behind.
Los Secretos craft a specific kind of Spanish melancholy that feels like a warm coat on a cold Madrid night. Their sound is built on a foundation of clean, jangly electric guitars and acoustic strumming, often incorporating unexpected Americana elements like pedal steel and country-rock rhythms. It is music that occupies the space between the energy of the New Wave and the timelessness of a classic ballad, never quite fully happy but always deeply melodic.
What truly sets them apart is the fragile, honest quality of the vocals, originally from Enrique Urquijo and later carried by his brother Álvaro. There is a lack of artifice in their delivery that makes every song feel like a private confession. Their arrangements are meticulous but never overproduced, allowing the emotional weight of the lyrics to sit front and center, often dealing with themes of loss, urban loneliness, and the passage of time.
To understand their legacy, start with the late 80s and early 90s material. Tracks like 'Déjame' or 'Pero a tu lado' are essential entry points that showcase their ability to turn personal sadness into universal anthems. It is the ideal soundtrack for moments of quiet reflection or for those times when you want to feel the comforting weight of nostalgia without it becoming overwhelming.
Los Secretos are a Spanish rock band founded in Madrid in 1978 and often associated with the movida madrileña movement. The band's lineup has undergone many changes over the years, beginning with the successive deaths of two of their drummers, Canito (1979) and Pedro A. Díaz (1984), both to traffic accidents. In their early years, the core of the band was made up of the three Urquijo brothers, Álvaro, Enrique, and Javier. Javier left the band in the mid-80's, and Enrique died of a drug overdose in 1999, leaving Álvaro as the sole remaining founding member. The band's current lineup consists of Álvaro Urquijo (vocals and guitars), Ramón Arroyo (guitars), Jesús Redondo (keyboards), Juanjo Ramos (bass), and Santi Fernández (drums). Alongside such bands as Nacha Pop, Mamá, and Trastos, they were an integral part of the Spanish popular music revival which came to be known as "The New Wave of Madrid", and they have remained active for over thirty years; to this day they are considered to be one of the most important groups in the history of Spanish pop rock music.
