Love as Laughter was the primary creative vehicle for Sam Jayne, a pivotal figure in the Pacific Northwest indie rock scene. Formed in 1994 following the dissolution of the influential post-hardcore band Lync, the project marked a shift toward melodic, lo-fi indie pop and psychedelic-tinged rock.
Throughout its existence, the band maintained a close relationship with the K Records and Sub Pop ecosystems, eventually signing to Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace label. The sound is characterized by Jayne's distinctive gravelly vocals and a songwriting style that blends classic pop structures with a 'shambolic' garage-rock execution. Critically, the band is often cited as a bridge between the abrasive energy of early 90s underground rock and the more melodic, expansive indie sounds of the 2000s. Jayne's tragic passing in 2020 solidified the band's legacy as a cult favorite that prioritized emotional honesty and DIY aesthetics over commercial polish.
