Intro

Maarja Nuut creates music that feels like a conversation between a centuries-old ghost and a modern synthesizer. Her sound is rooted in the traditional fiddle techniques of Northern Estonia, but she uses live looping and electronic processing to stretch those folk melodies into shimmering, hypnotic tapestries. It is music that demands a quiet room and an open mind, rewarding the listener with a sense of deep, ancient time.

What makes her truly distinctive is the way she treats the violin not just as a melodic instrument, but as a rhythmic engine. By layering short, repetitive bowing patterns with whispered vocals and modular synth pulses, she creates a trance-like state that mirrors the giddy intensity of old village dances. There is a precision to her work that feels almost mathematical, yet the emotional core remains earthy, organic, and deeply connected to the Estonian landscape.

Start with 'Une meeles' to hear her master the art of the solo loop, or dive into 'Hinged' for a more expansive, electronic-leaning experience. Both albums showcase her ability to make the avant-garde feel as natural as a walk through a pine forest.

Maarja Nuut (born 11 February 1986) is an Estonian singer and violinist. After first studying classical music, she turned to folk, adopting the village style of traditional Estonian songs. She debuted as a solo artist in 2013, winning the Artists Prize at Tallinn Music Week. In 2016, she began to collaborate with Hendrik Kaljujärv (aka Ruum), who creates his own abstract electronic sounds. Together they have formed a successful duo, releasing recordings and performing at international festivals.
