High-octane power metal fused with the 8-bit soul of a Commodore 64. Anthemic, tech-obsessed, and built for digital crusaders.
Machinae Supremacy sounds like the inside of a high-performance gaming PC from 2004. It is a collision of crunchy, melodic power metal and the distinct, chirping textures of the SID chip. The guitars provide a heavy, rhythmic foundation, but the lead melodies are often carried by the SidStation, creating a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic for the 8-bit era and firmly rooted in modern alternative metal. It is bright, fast, and unapologetically digital.
What truly sets them apart is the 'SID metal' aesthetic. Unlike many bands that use synths as a background wash, Machinae Supremacy treats the 8-bit chip as a lead instrument with the same status as the guitar. Robert Stjärnström's vocals are another signature element: high-pitched, slightly nasal, and delivered with a storyteller's earnestness that fits the band's often tech-dystopian or heroic lyrical themes. The production is clean and punchy, ensuring the complex electronic layers never get lost in the distortion.
Start with 'Deus Ex Machinae' to hear the foundational blend of chiptune and metal, or dive into the 'Jets'n'Guns' soundtrack for a purely instrumental showcase of their high-energy composition style. If you want their most polished, anthemic work, 'A View from the End of the World' captures their ability to write massive hooks that feel like they belong in a futuristic arena.
Machinae Supremacy is a Swedish/Finnish band that combines modern heavy metal, power metal and alternative rock with chiptunes. Deus Ex Machinae, the band's first commercial album was released in 2004 through the independent (and now defunct) MbD Records UK.
