Magenta is a cornerstone of the 21st-century British neo-progressive and symphonic rock scene. Formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalist Rob Reed following his work with Cyan and the pop project Trippa, the band was conceived as a vehicle for large-scale, ambitious progressive rock.
Reed's production style is heavily informed by the classic era of Genesis and Yes, as well as the textural layering of Mike Oldfield. A defining characteristic of the band is the lead vocal work of Christina Booth, whose background in pop and industrial music provides a unique, accessible counterpoint to the complex instrumental backing. Their 2001 debut, Revolutions, signaled a revival of the symphonic epic, while later works like Metamorphosis explored darker, more contemporary textures. Critically, they are lauded for their high production values and Booth's vocal prowess, often winning 'Best Female Vocalist' and 'Best Album' awards within the progressive rock community. They occupy a similar space to peers like IQ and Pendragon but are distinguished by their stronger emphasis on orchestral arrangements and female-led narratives.
