High-fantasy power metal with soaring soprano vocals and cinematic synth textures. Dramatic, melodic, and built for epic storytelling.
Magica is a cornerstone of the Romanian metal scene, formed in 2002 by guitarist Bogdan Costea. Emerging during the height of the female-fronted symphonic metal movement, the band quickly distinguished themselves through a rigorous focus on high-fantasy concept albums.
Their debut, 'The Scroll of Stone', established a blueprint of melodic power metal influenced by Rhapsody and Helloween, but with a distinct Eastern European melodic sensibility. Throughout the 2000s, they ascended within the European market, signing with AFM Records and touring alongside genre giants like After Forever and Apocalyptica. Ana Mladinovici's vocal performance is central to their identity, eschewing the 'beauty and the beast' growl-and-soprano trope for a pure, lead-driven operatic style. Critically, they are respected for maintaining the traditional power metal 'gallop' while integrating modern symphonic textures. Their later work, such as 'Dark Diary' and 'Center of the Great Unknown', shows an evolution toward more complex arrangements and darker lyrical themes, solidifying their legacy as one of the most consistent melodic metal acts from the Balkans.
