Dense, rhythmic-free guitar washes that feel like being submerged in a deep, murky ocean. Dark ambient for those who find comfort in the hum of the machine.
Main creates music that feels less like a performance and more like a geological process. It is a world of 'drumless' ambient where the electric guitar is stripped of its traditional rock identity and repurposed as a generator of pure texture. The sound is often murky and submerged, evoking the feeling of being deep underwater or lost in a dense, industrial fog where the only landmarks are distant, vibrating hums.
What makes Main truly distinctive is Robert Hampson's transition from the psychedelic repetition of his previous band, Loop, into a space of total abstraction. By abandoning percussion, the music relies on the friction of layered feedback and the slow decay of notes to create a sense of movement. It is dark and foreboding, yet there is a strange, meditative peace to be found in its massive, slow-moving structures.
For those new to the project, the early 'Firmament' series provides the perfect gateway. These recordings capture the moment where rock music dissolves into pure atmosphere, offering a bridge between the grit of post-punk and the ethereal stillness of modern drone. It is essential listening for anyone who prefers the texture of a sound to the melody of a song.
Main were a British band formed in 1991 by guitarists Robert Hampson and Scott Dowson, both formerly of the English rock band Loop. Drawing on that group's experimentation with drones and guitar texture, the duo moved further into ambient sound, eventually abandoning traditional percussion and rhythm altogether. They released a number of albums and EPs to critical praise in the 1990s. Dawson left the group in 1996. In 2006, Hampson announced that Main had effectively been disbanded in favour of his solo work. In October 2010, he announced that he would be reactivating Main as a more collaborative process with other sound artists. In 2011, the German composer Stephan Mathieu joined Hampson for a current incarnation of the project.
