Mandala

Mandala was a seminal German acid trance duo consisting of Raymond Beyer and the legendary Tom Weyer, better known as Commander Tom. Active primarily between 1993 and 1995 on the influential Noom Records label, they were central to the 'Noom sound' which bridged the gap between hard trance and driving techno.

Their work is characterized by sophisticated use of the TB-303, often employing multiple layers of acid lines that interact to create complex harmonic textures. Unlike many of their contemporaries who leaned into pop-oriented melodies, Mandala maintained a darker, more underground aesthetic that incorporated elements of New Age philosophy and Eastern scales, as evidenced by titles like 'Australia' and 'The Tantra'. This fusion of 'tribal' sensibilities with high-bpm electronic precision made them favorites in the global rave circuit. Critically, they are regarded as masters of the 12-inch format, with their EPs remaining highly sought after by vinyl collectors specializing in the Frankfurt and Hamburg trance scenes. Their influence persists in modern neo-acid and psychedelic techno circles.
