Mareux is the solo project of Los Angeles-based Iranian-American musician Aryan Ashtiani. Emerging in the early 2010s, Mareux became a pivotal figure in the modern darkwave and coldwave resurgence.
His sound identity is built on a foundation of 80s-inspired synth-pop, but it is distinguished by a lo-fi production aesthetic and a specific focus on 'vigorous bleak bass pulsations.' While many of his peers in the darkwave scene lean into harsh industrial textures, Mareux maintains a melodic, almost romantic sensibility influenced by R&B vocal phrasing. His career trajectory was significantly altered in 2021 when his 2015 cover of The Cure's 'The Perfect Girl' became a viral sensation on TikTok, amassing hundreds of millions of streams and introducing darkwave aesthetics to a Gen Z audience. This cultural breakthrough led to a major label deal with Warner Records and a high-profile performance at Coachella in 2023. Critically, he is praised for modernizing the 'goth' sound without losing its essential gloom, acting as a bridge between the underground coldwave scene and mainstream alternative music.
