Intimate, sun-dappled indie folk featuring warm Wurlitzer keys and breathy vocals. Perfect for slow Sunday mornings and quiet moments of reflection.
Marike Jager creates music that feels like a well-loved sweater: soft, familiar, and expertly crafted. Her sound is anchored by her delicate acoustic guitar work and a vocal delivery that sits somewhere between a secret whispered in your ear and a clear, melodic invitation. There is a distinct organic warmth to her recordings, often eschewing digital sheen for the tactile hum of a Wurlitzer or the resonant breath of a harmonium.
What sets her apart is the whimsical, almost cinematic quality of her arrangements. While she fits comfortably in the singer-songwriter tradition, she frequently dips into chamber pop territory, using subtle percussion and keyboard textures to build small, vibrant worlds within her songs. Her music captures the specific feeling of being a traveler, even when she is singing about home, reflecting a restless but gentle curiosity.
Newcomers should start with 'Celia Trigger' to hear her at her most iconic. It perfectly balances her folk roots with the playful, slightly experimental pop sensibilities that have made her a staple of the Dutch indie scene. It is music for the quiet hours when you want to feel both grounded and a little bit lighter.
Marike Jager (born 4 February 1979 in Amersfoort) is a Dutch singer-songwriter, guitarist and television presenter. She grew up in Leusden and learned to play the guitar while backpacking through Australia, New Zealand, Asia and South Africa. There she wrote her first song 'Lizzy'. When she got back in the Netherlands she went to the stages, quickly winning the 'Studenten Songfestival in Maastricht (songfestival for students in Maastricht). Soon after she also won the Sky Radio Talentenjacht (Sky Radio Talenthunt), the demopoll by the Brussels Studio and the prestigious 'Grote Prijs van Nederland' 2003 (Grand Prix of the Netherlands) in the category singer-songwriter. After winning the Grote Prijs, she meets Henk Jan Heuvelink. He plays the wurlitzer, harmonium and the piano. Together they regularly play at festivals, in theaters and on the radio. In 2008 drummer Nicky Hustinx joins the band.
