Formed in Bordeaux in 2007, Mars Red Sky has carved a unique niche within the European stoner and psychedelic rock scenes. The band is defined by the interplay between bassist Jimmy Kinast's massive, distorted low-end and Julien Pras's high, ethereal vocal delivery.
Pras, previously known for his work in the indie-pop outfit Calc, brings a sophisticated melodic sensibility to the band that is rare in the stoner rock genre. Their sound is heavily influenced by the 1970s proto-metal of Black Sabbath but filtered through a modern lens of shoegaze and space rock. Over five studio albums, they have evolved from a relatively straightforward fuzz-rock act into a more progressive and atmospheric entity, frequently incorporating cinematic structures and complex layering. Critically, they are praised for their 'aerial dimension,' a term often used to describe how their music manages to feel heavy without being oppressive.
