High-velocity guitar mastery that trades robotic speed for exotic, vocal-like melodies. Instrumental metal with a distinct Japanese pop and enka influence.
Marty Friedman’s music is a masterclass in making a guitar sound like it is speaking a foreign language. While his peers in the shred world often focus on linear speed, Friedman prioritizes 'exotic' note choices, pulling from Japanese scales and traditional Enka music to create melodies that feel both alien and deeply emotional. The sound is polished, powerful, and intensely melodic, characterized by a liquid-smooth tone that can pivot from a thrash metal assault to a soaring, cinematic ballad in a single phrase.
What truly sets him apart is his phrasing. He avoids the standard blues-rock clichés that dominate Western guitar, opting instead for strange, wide bends and a unique picking style that gives his notes a percussive, almost vocal quality. It is music that feels highly technical but never cold; there is a restless, searching energy in every solo that suggests a musician constantly trying to find a note that hasn't been played that way before.
For those new to his work, 'Dragon's Kiss' is the essential starting point for pure metal brilliance, while 'Scenes' showcases his more atmospheric, Kitaro-influenced side. If you want to hear his modern, high-energy fusion of styles, 'Inferno' captures the aggressive yet melodic complexity he has perfected during his years living and recording in Japan.
