Intro

Martyr is a cornerstone of the Dutch heavy metal scene, originally forming in Utrecht in 1982. They rose to prominence during the mid-80s 'Dutch Steel' wave, a period characterized by a unique blend of NWOBHM influence and emerging speed metal aggression.

Their early discography, specifically 'For The Universe' (1985) and 'Darkness At Time’s Edge' (1986), established them as technical innovators who could compete with the international rosters of Roadrunner and Metal Blade. After a long hiatus starting in 1987, the band's 2001 reunion sparked a significant second act, transitioning from a legacy act into a productive contemporary force. While often confused with the Canadian technical death metal band of the same name, the Dutch Martyr is defined by a melodic-yet-heavy approach that incorporates elements of thrash and power metal. Their influence is most felt in the European underground, where they are cited as a bridge between traditional heavy metal and the more extreme technical subgenres that followed.
