Mason Proper is an American indie rock quintet formed in 2004 in Alpena, Michigan, later based in Ann Arbor. Led by primary songwriter Jonathan Visger, the band developed a reputation for a highly idiosyncratic, 'jittery' sound that blended the melodic sensibilities of 2000s indie pop with the experimental textures of art rock.
Their debut, 'There Is a Moth in Your Chest' (2007), established their signature aesthetic: dense, maximalist arrangements characterized by prominent, often unstable synthesizer lines and Visger's manic vocal delivery. The band's history is famously marked by a series of logistical misfortunes, including multiple destroyed tour vans and equipment failures, which reportedly influenced the increasingly frenetic and 'mentally unstable' energy of their live performances. Their follow-up, 'Olly Oxen Free' (2008), saw them refining this chaos into more structured, though still deeply eccentric, pop compositions. Critically, they are often grouped with the mid-2000s wave of 'intellectual' indie rock, though their specific focus on rhythmic instability and surrealist lyrical themes gives them a darker, more anxious edge than many of their contemporaries.
