Matrix

Tetsuo Tsuri, recording as Matrix, represents the Japanese vanguard of the influential Chain Reaction label, an offshoot of Berlin's Basic Channel. His work is foundational to the 'dub techno' and 'minimal techno' movements of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Unlike his UK namesake (Jamie Quinn) who focused on high-energy Drum and Bass, Tsuri's Matrix project is defined by extreme minimalism, spatial depth, and a 'submerged' sonic palette. His debut album 'Isolated Dot' (1999) is considered a cult classic of the genre, utilizing long-form structures and heavily processed rhythmic pulses that blur the line between ambient music and techno. Tsuri's sound identity is built on the manipulation of digital artifacts, using hiss, crackle, and delay as primary melodic elements. His cultural position is that of a 'producer's producer,' highly respected within the experimental electronic community for his technical precision and ability to evoke profound emotional states through very few musical elements.
