Gothic punk sensibilities stripped down to acoustic bones. Dark, romantic, and morbidly witty songs for the lonely hours after midnight.
Matt Skiba’s solo work feels like the quiet, haunted aftermath of an Alkaline Trio show. It is music that lives in the shadows of the city, trading the distorted roar of his main band for the intimate, dusty resonance of an acoustic guitar. There is a persistent sense of urban isolation here, as if these songs were written on the back of napkins in dimly lit bars or during long, solitary bike rides through Chicago streets.
What makes Skiba distinctive is his ability to marry the macabre with the melodic. He uses the vocabulary of horror and mortality to describe the mundane pains of heartbreak and addiction, delivered with a smooth, baritone croon that feels both comforting and dangerous. It is a specific brand of 'gothic punk' that owes as much to The Cure and Joy Division as it does to the Ramones, characterized by a dark, self-deprecating wit.
For those new to his solo output, the 'Demos' collection or his split with Kevin Seconds are the best entry points. They showcase his songwriting at its most vulnerable and unvarnished, highlighting the sharp lyrical hooks that have made him a cult icon in the punk scene for over two decades.
Matthew Thomas Skiba (born February 24, 1976) is an American musician and songwriter best known as the co-lead vocalist and guitarist of the punk rock band Alkaline Trio, and served as the co-lead vocalist and guitarist of Blink-182 from 2015 to 2022. Skiba's lyrical content commonly involves dark romantic themes. Alkaline Trio formed in 1996 with Skiba as the frontman. Since then, the band has released ten full-length albums over two decades. Skiba also recorded albums with side projects including Heavens and theHELL, as well as two full-length solo albums with his backing band, the Sekrets. Following Tom DeLonge's second departure from Blink-182 in early 2015, Skiba was brought on to fill in for three shows and was later made a full-time member. He recorded two albums with the band, California (2016) and Nine (2019), before DeLonge returned in 2022.
