Menace Beach

Crunchy, fuzz-drenched indie rock with a sweet melodic center. Like a 90s basement tape polished for the modern era. Perfect for high-energy slacker afternoons.

Intro

Menace Beach emerged from the fertile Leeds DIY scene in 2012, initially characterized as a 'supergroup' due to a rotating lineup featuring members of Hookworms, Sky Larkin, and Pulled Apart By Horses. Core duo Ryan Needham and Liza Violet have maintained a consistent creative vision that bridges 90s American indie rock (think Guided by Voices or Pavement) with British shoegaze and psych-pop.

Their early work, particularly the 2015 debut Ratworld, was defined by a heavy reliance on 'Big Muff' style fuzz and dual-vocal harmonies. As the band evolved, particularly on 2018's Black Rainbow Sound, they integrated more modular synths and darker, post-punk atmospheres, moving away from simple slacker-rock tropes. Needham's subsequent success with Yard Act has brought renewed interest to the project's discography. Critically, they are praised for maintaining a 'handmade' feel despite increasingly sophisticated production, serving as a bridge between the lo-fi aesthetic of the early 2010s and the more polished art-rock of the current decade.
