Menhir

Formed in 1995 in Thuringia, Germany, Menhir is a cornerstone of the European pagan metal scene. While many of their contemporaries leaned into the 'humppa' or party-oriented side of folk metal, Menhir maintained a serious, historical, and atmospheric approach.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of mid-tempo black metal, but it is heavily modified by traditional heavy metal structures and a profound focus on Germanic and Celtic history. Their career arc peaked with the 2007 release 'Hildebrandslied', which saw them incorporating Old High German lyrics and sophisticated choral arrangements, earning them critical acclaim for their authenticity and musical maturity. They are often cited alongside acts like Falkenbach for their ability to evoke a specific, non-cheesy sense of ancient heritage. Within the metal community, they are respected as 'musician's musicians' for their technical restraint and thematic dedication. Their influence is most felt in the 'epic' sub-strain of black metal where atmosphere and narrative take precedence over raw speed.
