Merchandise emerged from the fertile Tampa, Florida hardcore punk scene, specifically revolving around the Cult Maternal and Drugged Conscience labels. While their roots are in the DIY underground, the band quickly evolved beyond the constraints of traditional punk, incorporating elements of krautrock, shoegaze, and sophisticated pop.

Their breakthrough came with 2012's 'Children of Desire', which garnered significant critical acclaim for its ambitious song structures and Carson Cox's crooning vocal style. This led to a high-profile signing with 4AD, where they further refined their sound on 'After the End' (2014), moving toward a cleaner, more melodic aesthetic influenced by classic British indie and new wave. Critics often highlight their ability to balance 'misanthropy' with 'pop genius', noting their constant reinvention.
